John 17:1–26 — The High Priestly Prayer: Glory, Guarding & Unity
Study Diagram Overview
From my Excalidraw study notes—the farewell night’s climax: Jesus looks to heaven and prays for Himself (hour come, mutual glory, eternal life as knowing Father and Son), for the disciples He guarded (joy completed, not of the world, sanctified and sent), and for all who believe through their word (unity, shared glory, love in them). Introduction: The Hour Has Come
John 16 closed with peace in Christ amid tribulation. John 17 is the Son speaking to the Father so the Eleven hear how glory, mission, and love fit together before the cross.
The diagram links John 2:4 (“My hour has not yet come”) to 17:1 (“the hour has come”). Eternal life is defined in 17:3: to know the only true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.
Structure at a Glance
| Section | Verses | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Prayer for Himself | 17:1–5 | Mutual glory; authority; eternal life; glory before the world existed |
| Prayer for the disciples | 17:6–19 | Given ones; guarded; joy; not of the world; protect; sanctify; sent |
| Prayer for all believers | 17:20–26 | Unity; glory; with Christ; Father’s love in them |
Jesus Prays for Himself (17:1–5)
1 Jesus spoke these things, looked up to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come. Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you, 2 since you gave him authority over all people, so that he may give eternal life to everyone you have given him. 3 This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and the one you have sent—Jesus Christ. 4 I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do. 5 Now, Father, glorify me in your presence with that glory I had with you before the world existed.”
Notes from the study diagram (C17):
- The hour has come—contrast John 2:4; the cross and exaltation are at hand.
- Glorify your Son so that the Son may glorify you—to glorify the Son is to reveal who He is through death, resurrection, and exaltation, not mere applause.
- Completing the work (17:4)—the Son has glorified the Father on earth; 17:5 asks for the glory He had before the world existed—preexistence confessed in prayer.
- Authority over all people—a new era: eternal life for all the Father has given to the Son.
- This is eternal life—knowing the true God and the Sent One.
▶ Discipleship application: Measure “eternal life” by 17:3—knowing Father and Son—not by comfort or longevity.
Jesus Prays for His Disciples (17:6–19)
6 “I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from the world. They were yours, you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. 7 Now they know that everything you have given me is from you, 8 because I have given them the words you gave me. They have received them and have known for certain that I came from you, and they have believed that you sent me. 9 I pray for them. I am not praying for the world but for those you have given me, because they are yours. 10 Everything I have is yours, and everything you have is mine, and I have been glorified in them. 11 I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by your name that you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I was protecting them by your name that you have given me. I guarded them and not one of them is lost, except the son of destruction, so that the Scripture may be fulfilled. 13 Now I am coming to you, and I speak these things in the world so that they may have my joy completed in them. 14 I have given them your word. The world hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I am not praying that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 I sanctify myself for them, so that they also may be sanctified by the truth.”
The diagram highlights 17:12–19 and labels this intercession for disciples; 6–11 belongs to the same prayer (given ones, kept, protect, oneness).
Notes from the study diagram (C17):
- Good shepherd (John 10:11)—He guarded them; none lost except the son of destruction (Judas).
- My joy completed in them (17:13)—the farewell discourse aims at His joy in hostile days.
- The world hated them—not of the world as He is not of the world (15:18–19).
- Not take them out of the world—protection, not escape; discipleship is not pain-free, but the prayer is for guard in mission.
- Belonging to Jesus while living among people and serving him—sent as the Son was sent (17:18).
- Sanctify by the truth—set apart by the word for God’s service (17:17).
- I sanctify myself for them—the High Priest sets Himself apart (at the cross) so they are sanctified in truth.
▶ Discipleship application: Pray for protection from the evil one, not only for an easier life. Let the word sanctify you for service in the world.
Jesus Prays for All Believers (17:20–26)
20 “I pray not only for these, but also for those who believe in me through their word. 21 May they all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us, so that the world may believe you sent me. 22 I have given them the glory you have given me, so that they may be one as we are one. 23 I am in them and you are in me, so that they may be made completely one, that the world may know you have sent me and have loved them as you have loved me. 24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, so that they will see my glory, which you have given me because you loved me before the world’s foundation. 25 Righteous Father, the world has not known you. However, I have known you, and they have known that you sent me. 26 I made your name known to them and will continue to make it known, so that the love you have loved me with may be in them and I may be in them.”
Notes from the study diagram (C17):
- Those who believe through their word—the church across time, not only the Eleven.
- One as we are one—unity patterned on Father-Son mutual indwelling; that the world may believe (21) and know (23).
- Glory you have given me—shared for oneness, not platform-building.
- Loved them as you have loved me—the Father’s love for disciples is measured by His love for the Son.
- With me where I am… see my glory—hope anchored in love before the world’s foundation (17:24).
- Love… in them and I… in them—prayer ends in union: the vine’s goal stated as prayer.
▶ Discipleship application: Pursue unity that displays the Father and Son to the world. Ask for His love in you, not only for your side to win.

Reflection & Response
How does this shape your walk?
- Glorify: Where do you separate worship from the crucified and risen Christ?
- Protection: Escape the world—or be kept from the evil one on mission?
- Sanctify: What truth is setting you apart for service this week?
- Unity: Who do you need to pursue oneness with for the world’s sake?
- Love: Do you believe the Father loves you as He loves the Son—in Christ?
